I am an applied linguist at the University of Lisbon, interested in adult second language learning, bilingualism and multilingualism. My main research focus is the acquisition of speech or phonetics and phonology. I look at it from various perspectives, some of which (according to my colleagues) are a bit too exotic: phonetic training through phonoaesthetics, music and singing, and game-based learning. My language-learning philosophy is simple: we learn better when things make sense and come in context. I test this idea in research but this is also how I teach: from languages (a big part of my career took place in California where I trained military linguists) to linguistics courses and research methodology.
I also design games and write fiction novels but maybe I should stop here as it's getting way too exotic... |
