I am a Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Phonetics and Phonology at the University of Lisbon, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.
Before moving to Portugal, I taught languages and all shades of linguistics at the University College London, Queen Mary University, and the University of Kent, U.K. There I was awarded HEA (Higher Education Academy) Fellowship, an international recognition of a commitment to professionalism in teaching and learning in higher education. My research sits at the crossroads of experimental phonetics, psycholinguistics, and language pedagogy. My passion for second language acquisition was nurtured over more than a decade of teaching Russian as a second language in the United States. I served as an Assistant Professor at the Defense Language Institute training military linguists and coordinated and taught language programs at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, Concordia College, and the University of Pittsburgh. Drawing upon this experience, I developed an interest in exploring individual differences in language learning, with a specific focus on the acquisition of non-native speech. I work with a diverse set of experimental techniques, quantitative methods, and languages. I also design games for language learners.
